Joyriding in Southern Utah

I went down to Kanab earlier this week for two reasons—to go riding with Sterling and a few of our riding friends and to visit family members and Kanab employees and family members. (It’s been a long time since I’ve been down there to do that!)

On Wednesday, the six of us headed out on a joyride through the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. I’ve never ridden in sand before, and that was quite the experience. In fact, at one point Sterling was explaining to one of the other riders that occasionally a horse will decide he doesn’t want to go anymore and will just drop under you, kind of like a camel. Not a minute later, my horse did exactly that! I nudged her with my knees, and she got back up (I didn’t want her rolling over with me onboard!), but the timing of Sterling’s remark and then my horse doing her camel collapse was ironic.

I’ve lived for years in southern Utah, yet I saw places—gorgeous places—on Wednesday that I didn’t even know existed. In addition to riding over the sand dunes, we went to the South Fork Indian Canyon to check out the ancient (estimated 800 years old) pictographs there. We took a short hike down the canyon and were gazing at incredible pictographs preserved on the alcove walls of the canyon. This was the first ride I’ve taken in southern Utah, and it was definitely not the last!

Yesterday, Sterling and most of our friends went on another joyride. Three of them had planned to do an endurance ride, but they had so much fun on Wednesday, they decided to skip the endurance ride and just go with Sterling. I stayed behind in Kanab to visit our employees at the Kanab facility and family (got to see my aunt, sister, and stepfather).

So after a couple of days of riding and visiting (and did I mention eating? Went to Rocking V and Escobars—our two Kanab favorites), we got back home last night, just in time to get ready for our worldwide incentive trip today. Can’t wait to spend the next week with our amazing leader demonstrators from around the world!

Happy to see you on a horse again, Shelli! I have had a few crashes myself and know that it takes something special to get back on again. You continue to inspire us in so many ways!

Southern Utah is beautiful! I will be living on Boulder Mtn. again this summer (June & July) while working at the Wildcat Info Center. If you're ever riding there, stop in and say hi to this Ohio demo!

Beautiful pictures! I would have to say that Sterling's comments about the horse dropping down just moments before it happened were more of a blessing or tender mercy than just merely irony.
Hope you are having a fantastic trip! I look forward to the pictures and report.

Beautiful pictures! It looks like you were having a ball and that's the very best reward after all you've been through! Hope that the cruise puts a cap on all your hard work.
